Several people die as multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi

In a tragic mishap, 60 people lost their lives as a building collapsed in the city of Delhi.
There was shock and disbelief when a multi storied building in the eastern part of the city of Delhi suddenly collapsed on Monday seriously injuring 80 people. According to Ms. Shiela Dixit, the C.M of Delhi, 30 people are still trapped under the debris of the building. Lalita Park, which is the name of the locality where the accident occurred, is a narrow and congested one due to which the relief and rescue operations were affected as ambulances and fire fighting teams found difficulty in reaching there on time. Ms. Sheila Dixit termed the incident as very tragic and almost unprecedented in the city of Delhi. Press Trust of India quoted her as saying that intensity of the tragedy is unparalleled. She said that it was not immediately known as to what caused the collapse, and that she would order an inquiry.
A K Walia, who is the finance minister in the government of Delhi, is of the opinion that the unprecedented rains in Delhi this year must have made the foundations of the building very weal leading up to this collapse. According to the minister, there were floods in the Yamuna River this year and the banks had burst causing damage to the building which is situated near the banks of the Yamuna River. The building was being used for residential purposes though there were small businesses situated in the building.
The tragedy occurred in the evening at about 2015 (1445 GMT) on 15th of November. According to an eyewitness, Gurwinder Singh, who is a taxi driver, the building collapsed like nine pins giving no escape route to those who were inside. The building was old and the structure was already very weak.
